Reverse engineering and reverse engineering

Our reverse engineering process at Nopec benefits from the experience gained from thousands of quality control projects. We are very familiar with all manufacturing processes and their typical design requirements, manufacturing tolerances and error patterns.

Your CAD model is created exactly according to the original design intent.

Reverse engineering process

Reverse engineering is the process by which a physical object is reconstructed in order to determine its structure, architecture or functional relationships. In the area of 3D scanning, point clouds of the measurement object are recorded and converted into surface data (e.g. IGES or STEP). Depending on the requirements, various processes can be realized:

Raw data: Point Cloud

STL model

STP file

A major advantage of reverse engineering is the ability to create parameterized surfaces that enable precise adaptation and reproduction of components. In addition, the CAD models can be constructively adapted to the respective production requirements, which guarantees flexible and efficient production. Our customer is delighted with the precision and efficiency of the reverse engineering process and we are pleased to have been recommended.

STL data

The point cloud created from the high-precision scans is processed and combined into a surface shape using triangulation. This creates an initial surface model of the object, which forms the basis for further reverse engineering.

Optimized reverse engineering

With optimized reverse engineering, free-form surfaces are generated based on the STL models created. This process is particularly suitable for geometries with complex structures, which can be captured efficiently and is therefore a cost-effective and time-saving option for the customer. In the following example, the base surface of a dented shell in its actual state is not a plane, but a free-form surface. Using optimized reverse engineering, this curvature was reconstructed as a free-form surface and corresponds precisely to the actual state of the measurement object. The model can be exported in all common CAD data formats such as STEP or IGES data.

Constructive surface return

The CAD model is parametrically reconstructed on the basis of the scan data. The constructive surface feedback also enables hybrid reconstructions of the measurement object from parametric control geometries and free-form surfaces. These CAD models form the basis for the design department to derive technical drawings, for the development of tools, for 3D printing, simulations (FEM) and much more. The model can be exported in all common CAD data formats such as STEP or IGES data. In the following example, a dented shell was scanned and a CAD model was constructed. This model consists exclusively of standard geometries due to the design processing step.

Design customization & individual creation of CAD models

Reverse engineering enables the scanned data in the CAD model to be adapted as required. This means that any desired change to a real object can be implemented in the CAD model.
